Douglas C. Richardson Douglas C. Richardson was educated at Wilfrid Laurier University (B.A. Hons, 1991) and the University of Western Ontario (LL.B., 1994). Douglas was called to the Bar in Ontario in 1996 and has since focused his practice on meeting the needs of the media and in 2008 became a partner of O’Donnell, Robertson & Sanfilippo.

Practice Focus:
• Representing broadcasters, newspapers, book publishers, news agencies, magazines, electronic media and insurers in litigation including claims in defamation and copyright.
• Providing pre-publication and pre-broadcast advice to broadcasters, newspapers, book publishers, magazines, news agencies, electronic media and other publishers on various matters including issues concerning defamation, copyright, publication bans, court reporting, privacy and advertising.
• Advising and representing media in gaining access to court proceedings and court documents.
• Insurance defence litigation with particular emphasis on the defence of newspapers, magazines, internet providers, news agencies, broadcasters and other publishers.
• Monitoring/advisory counsel to insurers in relation to defamation claims.
• Experienced in alternative dispute resolution.
• Providing corporate/commercial assistance and counsel to media organizations including advice regarding corporate organization and the negotiation and drafting of commercial agreements including:

licensing of various forms of content for all forms of platforms.

service and distribution agreements.

publishing agreements.

joint ventures involving content providers and distributors.
• Frequent presenter of seminars to broadcasters, newspapers and other publishers on issues of defamation, copyright and court reporting.
• Frequent contributor to industry publications of articles concerning legal issues faced by publishers and broadcasters.
